TikTok takeover!

TikTok. The social media platform that has taken over the world through 15 second videos. The app was out long before videos started to go viral and influencers started to take over. I did end up downloading it a month or two after its launch, because I was interested in the similarity to Vine (the beloved video app, that was deleted years ago). At the launch time, barely any one was using the app, specifically no celebrity’s/influencers were. Companies and influencers started to catch onto the rapidly growing popularity of the app and started to make accounts. Videos started to go viral, making businesses explode overnight. People were also bored, due to the timing, the COVID pandemic started and people were sitting in their homes with nothing to do. TikTok came along and gave people the opportunity to make their small business go viral or just have fun posting trendy videos, for example the renegade dance challenge. Below is an example of the famous influencer, who blew up on TikTok, who now has 108 million followers, Charlie D’Amelio. She has made her name by continually posting on TikTok and partaking in the trends and challenges.

I became so interested in the app, because of the popularity and how businesses started to go viral overnight. Some business’ have reported tripling their profit margins over night, after one of their videos went viral. This has been something that has been helping many struggling business owners during the harsh financial times of the pandemic. I started my own small business and launched a TikTok, which has already received a decent amount of views/likes. I have not gone viral, but am working on creating content that would be unique enough to.

I think it is a great tool for business and PR practitioners, because it is a platform that is growing in popularity at a rapid pace and does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Many ages are on the app, children, teens, young adults, and elderly, which provides a chance to reach multiple different generations through one app, worldwide.

I attached a link for a fun quiz that I took. It helps determine if you would make a better TikTok or Instagram influencer. There has been a great debate on which requires more work and which is a “real” job. Which influencer would you be?
